Furniture removal cost calculator

$70 – $300 per piece

Furniture is the awkward category: bulky but light, so it fills a truck long before it gets heavy, and a lot of it can be given away instead of dumped. Add your pieces below for a real range before anyone visits.

Full-service haul-away (loading + disposal included). Final price is set by the hauler after seeing the job. US averages, 2026.

What moves the price

Volume first: haulers sell truck space, and a standard truck holds about fifteen cubic yards. A sofa takes two and a half of those, a mattress two, a dining chair half. Then access, because stairs and tight hallways add labor and a walk-up apartment costs more than a garage. Then condition, since a clean piece may go to resale while a broken one goes to landfill and carries a disposal fee.

Free pickup, when it applies

National charities collect large usable furniture on a schedule at no charge, and some pay for the privilege by reselling it. The bar is resale condition: torn upholstery, stains, smoke damage, pet damage or a broken frame will be declined at the door, which is worse than not booking it, because you have lost the slot as well as the pickup. Photograph the piece honestly when you book.

Mattresses are their own problem

Several states run mandatory mattress recycling programs funded by a fee collected at the point of sale, and haulers in those states may pass a per-mattress charge through. Check your state's disposal rules before assuming a mattress prices like other furniture.

FAQ

How much does furniture removal cost?

Single pieces run $25 to $300 depending on size: a chair is $25 to $60, a dresser $70 to $150, a sofa $90 to $180 and a sectional $150 to $300. A room's worth of furniture usually lands between $150 and $520, because haulers price by the truck space the load fills rather than per item.

Is it cheaper to remove furniture yourself?

Usually, if you have the vehicle and the help. The saving in a hauler's price is mostly labor, so getting pieces to the curb yourself takes roughly 25 percent off an in-home carry-out. Against that, most transfer stations charge a per-item or per-ton disposal fee, and mattresses often carry their own surcharge.

Will anyone take old furniture for free?

Clean, usable furniture often qualifies for free charity pickup, and several national charities collect large items on a schedule. Free pickup is for resale, so anything torn, stained, smoke-damaged or broken will normally be declined, which puts it back into paid removal.

Why is furniture priced by volume and not weight?

A junk truck runs out of space long before it runs out of weight capacity, and furniture is bulky but light. That is why a sofa costs more to remove than a dishwasher despite weighing less: it fills roughly two and a half cubic yards of a fifteen cubic yard truck.
